A Season to Build On

The Western Illinois women’s soccer team concluded the 2019 season in South Dakota.

VERMILLION, S.D. - What a season to remember for the Western Illinois women's soccer team. The 2019 campaign ignited momentum of the program as the Leathernecks fell 2-0 at South Dakota on Sunday (Nov. 3) in the season finale. 

"We had a good year," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "Our competitive level was much better and more consistent all season. Our seniors were excellent role models and leaders and will be missed. They leave the program in a better place."

For Madison Bulin, Emily Bollman, Kayla McCormick Ines Palmiero Herrera, Natalie Sielaff, and Maddie Wilsey the outing marked the final time they will wear the Purple and Gold. All that can be said is thank you for everything. 

South Dakota got out to an early lead in the first half with a goal in the 4th minute. The Coyotes added an insurance goal and made it 2-0 late in the first half at the 39th-minute mark. 

The Leathernecks had 10 total shots with Amy Andrews, Zoe Clarke, and Natalie Nagle, each firing two. 

Between the pipes for the final time, Palmiero Herrera added five saves to end her WIU career with 263 saves to finish fourth all-time in program history. 

Western Illinois concludes the season overall at 6-11-1 and a 2-6 mark in Summit League play.  

Season Highlights 

 
  • Western Illinois swept The Summit League Player of the Week awards for the first time in program history led by Zoe Clarke (Offensive) and Ines Palmiero Herrera (Defensive). 
  • Ines Palmiero Herrera wrote her name into the record book for season marks for tenth in saves, seventh in goals allowed, sixth in wins, sixth in save percentage, fourth minutes in goal and fifth in shutouts. 
  • Palmiero Herrea ends fourth all-time in saves and minutes in goal, fifth in wins, and shutouts. 
  • Amy Andrews wrote her name into the individual match-record for points (4) and goals (2) in a game. She now sits tied seventh all-time for game-winning goals with three. 
  • The backline made up of Bridget Schuler and Lauryn Peters started and played every single match to log 1660 minutes.
  • Newcomers Carolina GomesElainya Hawkins, Lynette HawkinsMadison McKay, Megan O'Neill and Malerie Rohweder all made their Leatherneck debuts this season.
  • The six victories tied a season mark for ninth all-time. 
  • The four shutouts posted by WIU tied for seventh all-time in a season. 
  • Western Illinois posted four straight wins for the first time since 2009.
