Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Western Falls to NDSU Before Returning Home

The second week of Summit League play is finalized as the Western Illinois volleyball team heads back to Macomb for home weekend.

FARGO, N.D. - Western Illinois volleyball fell in three to North Dakota State Sunday in Fargo, N.D. (21-25, 18-25, 20-25) before their Summit League home opener Friday (Oct. 11) and Sunday (Oct. 13).

The Leathernecks yet again out-blocked their opponents with five blocks to NDSU's four led by JoJo Kruize and Mackenzie Steckler. The team was also able to notch five aces compared to the Bisons three led by setters; Jessie Connell and Cassie Hunt.

The Leathernecks started the match with an ace from Connell that was quickly followed by a Bison run leaving WIU down within the first few points of the set. With another ace from Hunt, the score was tied quickly followed by the last Leatherneck lead of the set at 7-6. With a well-spread offense coming out of the hands of Connell WIU was able to force a 9-3 scoring run just a little too late dropping the first set.

Playing off the end of the last set, Western started the second set up 5-1. The Bisons were able to fight back and even the score and took off with a six-point lead and WIU was unable to fight back throughout the remainder of the set.

Mariah Mitchell starting the set off with a kill from Gabby DePersio was combated by yet another Bison run. In the middle of the set WIU was able to go on a run of their own Kicked off by an ace from Putman and fueled by Steckler and Knoop running out of time at the end of the set yet again.

Mitchell led the offensive efforts for the Leathernecks with 11 kills while Abby Knoop had an impressive .750 hitting percentage off her three kills.

WIU returns to Western Hall on Friday (Oct. 11) to take on Omaha for their Summit League home opener followed by Oral Roberts on Sunday (Oct 13).
