High-scoring Match Ends in Leatherneck Victory

Five different Leathernecks score in 5-3 win at Chicago State

CHICAGO, Ill. — The Western Illinois women's soccer team (2-4-1) scored four goals in the second half to defeat Chicago State (0-6-1) 5-3 on Friday, Sept. 14.  

It did not take long for the Leathernecks to take a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when Emily Bollman beat the goalkeeper one on one to chip it into the right corner. Bollman paces Western Illinois with four goals this season. The Leathernecks fired 10 shots on goal during the first half and took a 1-0 advantage into the half.
 
After a Leatherneck was called for a foul in the box, Sara Quevedo converted on a penalty kick in the 48th minute to knot the contest at 1-1. Western Illinois answered two minutes later as Bridget Schuler dribbled up the side and passed to Cassidy Grunewald for her first collegiate goal. The Leathernecks did not take their foot off the accelerator after taking the lead. Towards the end of the 57th minute, Lauryn Peters scored off an assist by Natalie Nagle to put Western up 3-1. The purple and gold capped off three goals in a 10-minute stretch, thanks to an unassisted goal by Bianca Romay in the 60th minute.  
 
Stacie Wolfgram joined the scoring party in the 78th minute as she was set up by a well-placed assist from Zoe Clarke for a 5-1 lead. Megan Rasmussen entered the game as the goalkeeper for Ines Palmiero Herrera in the 81st minute following another goal by Sara Quevedo. In the final minute, Marissa Beale scored her team-high third goal of the season to the bring the final score to 5-3.
 
The Leathernecks continue their road swing at Drake in a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Sept. 16.
