Leathernecks Fall Late to Drake

Amy Andrews scored her first collegiate goal in 2-1 loss.

DES MOINES, Iowa. — The Western Illinois women's soccer team (2-5-1) allowed a late goal in a 2-1 loss to Drake (3-6-0) on Sunday, Sept. 16.

"Not enough energy to match what Drake brought to the game today," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "We were still in the game however but were not sharp enough to win and gave the ball away too easily."

Ines Palmiero Herrera picked up four saves during the first half. Natalie Nagle put a shot on target in the 38th minute that was handled by the Drake goalkeeper as the match entered halftime in a scoreless tie.

Two minutes into the second half, Linda Fiorito sent a cross that bounced to Tawny Carroll to strike the ball into the back of the net. Down 1-0 in the 77th minute, the Leathernecks connected on the equalizer. Amy Andrews scored her first collegiate goal of the season off a rebound and Emily Bollman was credited with the assist.

The Bulldogs went ahead for good in the 84th minute on a cross from Vanessa Kavan to the near post where Hannah Bormann poked it into the back of the net. The Leathernecks did not get another shot attempt in the 2-1 loss.

Western Illinois wraps up the three-game road swing on Wednesday, Sept. 19 against Illinois State at 6 p.m.
