MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois women's soccer heads into the home opener looking build on its first win of the season at Northern Illinois by playing host to UMKC on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT:
Western Illinois women's soccer scored its first goal of the season while earning its first win of the season on a golden goal from Bianca Romay in overtime on Thursday (Aug. 23).

During the 31st minute, Stacie Wolfgram sent a corner kick to Kayla McCormick as her shot hit the crossbar. The Leathernecks kept the pressure on to end the first half on a long shot on goal from Cassidy Grunewald in the 41st minute and only a minute later Ashley Kuhlmann missed high as the match entered halftime scoreless.

Western turned up the heat in the 87th minute with back-to-back shots on goal by Gruenwald and Lauryn Peters. NIU's last opportunity came during the 89th minute on a shot straight on from Haley Hoppe, but Palmiero Herrera saved it to preserve the scoreless tie heading into overtime.

The golden goal came in the 99th minute as Grunewald ran through the midfield and passed to Romay on the right side who scored from 10 yards out for the overtime victory.

SCOUTING THE KANGAROOS:
UMKC enters the weekend with a 1-1-0 overall record including a 2-1 win in the season opener versus Oakland on Aug. 17 and a 2-0 loss on Aug. 19 to Saint Louis. Before heading to Macomb, the Kangaroos face UIC in Chicago on Friday, Aug. 24.

Chris Cissell is the eighth-year head coach of the Kangaroos and has compiled a 74-55-18 record at the helm. Senior forwards Lexie Howard and Kelsey Mothershead lead the way for UMKC after both scoring goals in the victory over Oakland. Howard is the reigning Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and Mothershead is a WAC Preseason All-Conference selection.

PREGAME QUOTE: "I thought the girls responded to our opening loss at Missouri State extremely well," assistant coach Josee Primeau said. "Sunday we face a talented UMKC team and have to start the game much quicker than we did last time out. Our first 15 minutes against Northern Illinois weren't our best and we can't afford to do that against a team of UMKC's quality. Home openers are always exciting so I'm sure the girls will be buzzing as we look to build on our last performance and continue our winning ways."

LOOKING AHEAD:
The Leathernecks are in the middle of four straight home games including their next contest against Louisiana Tech in Macomb on Friday, Aug. 31 at 5 p.m.
