Leathernecks Crack Win Column with OT Victory

Bianca Romay scores the golden goal to lift the Leathernecks past Northern Illinois 1-0.

DEKALB, Ill. — Western Illinois women's soccer scored its first goal of the season while earning its first win of the season on a golden goal from Bianca Romay in overtime on Thursday (Aug. 23).

"Fantastic win for us," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "We started slow but found our way into the game in the second half. Need to finish better, too many shots right at the keeper. Good finish in OT to win on the road. Our back line was very good tonight and deserved the shutout."

Bianca Romay fired off the first shot on goal for the Leathernecks (1-1-0) in the 15th minute, but the attempt was covered by the Northern goalkeeper. The Huskies had a prime chance off a cross in the 22nd minute but Ines Palmiero Herrera knocked the ball over the net.

During the 31st minute, Stacie Wolfgram sent a corner kick to Kayla McCormick as her shot hit the crossbar. The Leathernecks kept the pressure on to end the first half on a long shot on goal from Cassidy Grunewald in the 41st minute and only a minute later Ashley Kuhlmann missed high as the match entered halftime scoreless.

Bridget Schuler attempted a header that was stopped in the 62nd minute on a diving effort by the keeper.

Western turned up the heat in the 87th minute with back-to-back shots on goal by Gruenwald and Lauryn Peters. NIU's last opportunity came during the 89th minute on a shot straight on from Haley Hoppe, but Palmiero Herrera saved it to preserve the scoreless tie heading into overtime.

The golden goal came in the 99th minute as Grunewald ran through the midfield and passed to Romay on the right side who scored from 10 yards out for the golden goal victory over Northern Illinois.

The Leathernecks return to Macomb on Sunday, August 26 for the home opener against UMKC at 1 p.m.
