Leathernecks Claim Series Win at SDSU

Determined not to leave SDSU emptyhanded Sunday, Western posted a 9-6, come-from-behind victory in the rubber match.

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Western Illinois baseball team was determined not to leave Erv Huether Field emptyhanded on Sunday. In a doubleheader at South Dakota State, the Leathernecks dropped game one, 13-7, but claimed the series behind a 9-6, come-from-behind victory in the rubber match.

"We just wanted to keep things simple, put people in scoring position and get them in," said Drue Galassi. "This is a real confidence boost. The first game was a tough loss but we bounced back really well and just kept competing. Moving forward, we have to keep playing hard, keep our heads up and keep the same approach pitching and hitting."

Game 1
Drue Galassi tagged an RBI-double to right center to bring in the first score of the game, but five followed in the home half of the inning. The Jackrabbits led off the second with a solo home run and added four unearned scores before padding their advantage to 8-1 by the end of the fourth frame.

In the fifth, Dillon Sears ended Western's scoreless stretch with a single to right field, and Johnathan Fleek's sacrifice fly brought home another. The visitors went on to score in each of the last three innings, highlighted by Dave Dobrinich's first career home run.

Pinch hitting in the eighth inning, the senior cranked a two-RBI shot to right field to precede Alex Dorethy's sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Game 2
In similar fashion to game one, the Leathernecks jumped out to an early one-run lead only to trail by the end of the inning. SDSU led by as many as two runs heading into the fifth frame but saw things tied at 2-2 and 4-4, both on the bat of Galassi.

He recorded the first stalemate in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly and evened the score again in the sixth with an RBI ground out.

The Leathernecks regained their lead in seventh and even secured a little breathing room.

Dorethy's first hit of the series came right on time with a two-RBI single through the right side, and Galassi doubled to center field to plate another two. By the end of the inning, the Leathernecks recorded five runs on six hits, and it all started with Dillon Sears' leadoff triple.

The freshman Jack Carberry pitched three full innings in relief – he retired the side twice – en route to his second win. He allowed one hit and one run (unearned) with two walks and a strikeout. Austin Emanuel was called upon for the final out after Pete Minella opened the ninth with a fly out and strikeout, and the Jackrabbits loaded the bases for a fourth time but could only score one run.

Western will play host to Iowa Tuesday at 1 p.m. in its final home game of the 2018 season.
