Leathernecks Drop Heartbreaker on a Stolen Base

Western led Iowa for five innings before dropping the 5-4, go-ahead run in the ninth on a stolen base.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois' baseball team welcomed Iowa to Alfred D. Boyer Stadium  Tuesday in its final home game of the 2018 season; it led the visiting Hawkeyes for five innings before dropping the 5-4, go-ahead run in the ninth on a stolen base.

The Leathernecks wrapped their home slate with a record of 9-7, and will now embark on a road trip that includes a three-game series at Omaha (May 17-19), a single game at Kansas (May 20) and The Summit League Championship (May 23-26).

The first four runs of the day came from the bats of the Purple and Gold, and Western never trailed until the final inning. Alex Dorethy was credited with back-to-back RBIs on a ground out and sacrifice fly, with the latter sparking a three-run inning in the third.

Steve McShane singled to right field to bring Western's lead to 4-0, and Drue Galassi's single in the sixth marked the team's final hit of the day. The game was knotted at 4-4 in the top of the inning, and the tie was broken when Iowa stole home in the ninth.

Rallying in their final at-bats, the Leathernecks drew a pair of 3-0 walks but ended the frame with a double play.

Jordan Mikel pitched a no-decision with three innings, one hit, two walks and a career-high five strikeouts, and senior Pete Minella also dazzled in his final appearance at home with season highs in innings pitched (3.1) and strikeouts (3).
