Men's Golf Finishes Sixth In Summit League Championship

Trent Snodgrass finished 10th overall, the highest of any Leatherneck.

NEWTON, Kan. - The Western Illinois men's golf team concluded the first round of The Summit League Championship in third place and matched its first round score of 298 in the final round Tuesday (May 1), though it ultimately fell into the sixth position.

The Leathernecks posted a combined score of 921 in the three-day tournament while North Dakota State (893) narrowly edged Denver by two strokes to win the event.

"We had stretches where we played some really great golf, but the wind and really difficult holes were too much to overcome to get close to the lead," said head coach Mel Blasi.

Weather conditions were slightly better for the field and allowed for a competitive last day that saw many, including Trent Snodgrass (72) and Kyle Irlbacker (75), complete their best rounds of the tournament.

Three of Western's five entrants finished in the top half of the field, highlighted by Snodgrass finishing in 10th with a score of +11 (227). He was followed by Jackson Wetherbee in 15th place (230) who closed out play with a 75 to finish the tournament at +15. Drew Eaton finished at +16 (232) and in 17th place, and rounding out the leaderboard for the Leathernecks were Irlbacker in 23rd (+19) and Sean Miller in 31st (+22).

Zach Schroeder from Fort Wayne shot two-under par (214) for the individual championship.

With the season coming to an end, Blasi saw a lot of positives to take away. "I am very proud of our team," the coach said. "Trent Snodgrass, our lone freshman, had a great round today and a really solid tournament. With Jackson [Wetherbee], Drew [Eaton], and Kyle [Irlbacker] all coming back, we will return a great nucleus that will have a shot again next year."
