Leathernecks Blanked By Missouri

Stulga made her first start of the season in the circle

MACOMB, Ill. – The Leathernecks dropped a pair of contests to Mizzou on Wednesday afternoon, 7-0 and 2-0. Brooke Stulga made her first start of the season against the Tigers and was impressive in the circle. She turned in a complete game, while only giving up a single earned run and four hits.

"Brooke did well against Missouri last year so I knew that she would keep them off of balance this year. She is very different than Emily (Ira) and Payton (Abbott)," said head coach Beth Golitko. "I was very proud of the way that she played today."

GAME ONE

WIU was able to get runners on the bath paths in the first game of the doubleheader, but had a tough time manufacturing runs as they fell 7-0.

In the third inning, the Leathernecks loaded the bases a Mizzou error and two walks, but could not plate a run to take the first lead of the ballgame. The Tigers took advantage of their opportunity in the fourth inning, as they broke a scoreless contest to take a 1-0 lead. Missouri added a run on the fifth before exploding for five runs in the sixth inning for the finals runs of the game.

Western Illinois only recorded three hits in contest as Ashley Minyard, Halle Hollatz and Payton Abbott logged hits for the Purple and Gold.

GAME TWO

WIU could not get its bats going behind Stulga's impressive performance in the circle in game two. The Leathernecks recorded just four hits against the Tigers, who rank No. 22 in the nation in RPI and boast the nation's toughest strength of schedule.

Missouri smacked a solo home run in the second inning to capture the first lead of the contest. The Tiger's other run came in the fifth inning off of a double to right field that plated Regan Nash.

Hitters one-through-four recorded the only hits for the Leathernecks in the Wednesday afternoon affair. Minyard, Jasmine Lara, Kelsey Marlow and Hailey Duwa all reached on base hits. Hollaatz was left on base four separate times in the contest.

The Leathernecks continue Summit League play on Saturday and Sunday against South Dakota State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
