Ira Suffers First League Loss; Carlin Picks Up First League Win Versus SDSU

The Leathernecks split with the Jackrabbits on Saturday

MACOMB, ILL.- After dropping their first contest of the afternoon 13-3 in five innings to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, the Leathernecks bounced back to win the second game, 4-3.

GAME ONE

Emily Ira suffered her first Summit League loss in the first game on Saturday. The Jackrabbits jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning after two RBI singles plated Lyndsey Crist and Baily Janssen.

Hailey Duwa continued to display tremendous power at the plate in game one as she tied up the game in the fourth inning with a home run to left-center field. The Jackrabbits put together an 11-run fifth inning that proved to be too much for WIU.

Needing to score three runs to avoid the run-rule, Ira tripled in the bottom of the fifth frame. Jasmine Lara scored Ira with a single up the middle, but that would end as the Leathernecks' final run.

Ira went 2-for-2 at the plate while pitching 4.2 innings. She surrendered five runs and nine hits while striking out five.

GAME TWO

The Leathernecks responded to the loss with a 4-3 win, led by Abby Carlin in the circle and Sidney Bottino at the plate. The freshman picked up her second victory of the season and first Summit League win. She pitched 5.1 innings that yielded three runs. Bottino went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Western struck in the first inning when Halle Hollatz hit a sacrifice fly ball to score Lara. Each team waited until the fifth frame to plate another run; when the Leathernecks scored three.

The Purple and Gold began the inning with back-to-back singles from Lara and Ashley Minyard. After a sacrifice bunt from Marlow to advance Lara and Minyard over, the Jackrabbits intentionally walked Duwa to load the bases. Hollatz took advantage of the opportunity, as she roped a single to left field to score Lara. After another Leatherneck run, Bottino singled to bring home Mia Croswell and extend the lead to 4-1.

After South Dakota State scored two in the sixth, Brooke Stulga came into the circle for the Leathernecks. She closed the game for the Leathernecks and picked up her first save of the season.

The rubber match is set for tomorrow at 11 a.m. This will be Senior Day for the Leathernecks and Stulga, Kelsey Marlow, Sam Ralphs and Rachel Beatty will be honored.
