Leathernecks Fall To SDSU On Senior Day

WIU fell 13-3 in six innings

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois softball team fell on Senior Day 13-3 in six innings to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. Brooke Stulga, Sam Ralphs, Kelsey Marlow and Rachel Beatty were honored pregame for their efforts to the Leatherneck softball program.

"The seniors this season have had a passion for the game. They are all dedicated and have made a mark on Leatherneck softball," said head coach Beth Golitko.

After an RBI single, the Jacks got on the board first in the opening frame. Stugla, making her second start of the season, pitched out of a bases-loaded jam to strand a trio of Jackrabbits. The Purple and Gold responded in its half of the first inning after Marlow brought Jasmine Lara home to tie the score. Duwa scored Ralphs with a sacrifice fly to deep center field, and Sydney Hollings plated the final Leatherneck run of the inning with a single to left field to take a 3-1 Western Illinois lead.

The first inning would be the only time the Leathernecks would score. However, the Jackrabbit bats would stay hot, as they scored one in the second, six in the fourth and four in the sixth inning.

Western Illinois could not do anything in the sixth innings, as the run-rule was enforced and it ended the Leathernecks' day early. This was the first time this season that Emily Ira, Stulga, Megan Lotarski and Abby Carlin all saw action in the circle.

The Leathernecks travel to Fargo, N.D. for their final Summit League series against the NDSU Bison on May 5-6. With a series win, Western Illinois would clinch the regular season Summit League title.
