Pitching Impressive In Doubleheader Against Omaha

Ira and Carlin each turned in complete games

MACOMB, Ill. – After winning its eighth contest in a row, 5-1, the Western Illinois softball team dropped its second game of the afternoon against Omaha 1-0. Emily Ira and Abby Carlin each tossed complete games against the Mavericks in the doubleheader.

GAME ONE

Omaha struck first in the second inning but Hailey Duwa remedied the Omaha run quickly, as she hit a solo home run to right center field in the bottom half of the frame. The home run shot for Duwa marked her third consecutive game with a home run.

In the fourth inning, the Leathernecks were able to capture its next four runs. Alyssa Ealy began the inning with a single to right field and was plated by Kelsey Marlow, who double during the ensuing at-bat. The double caused a pitching change for the Mavericks, but Duwa and Halle Hollatz caused the Mavericks to go back to their starter with back-to-back hits. Abbott brought home Duwa with a single to right field, while Hollatz scored when Rachel Beatty poked a single to right field.

The score would hold at 5-1 for the remainder of the contest and the Leathernecks would win their eighth-straight game., the longest streak since 2012.  Duwa and Hollatz ended as the only Leatherneck with multi-hits, while Duwa finished as the sole member of the Purple and Gold log multiple RBIs.

Ira was impressive in the circle again, as she won her second game of the week and eighth of the season. In seven innings of work, she struck out 10 batters, while only walking one, and gave up only four hits.

GAME TWO

Although Carlin followed Ira's performance up with an inspiring one of her own, the Western Illinois bats could not stay hot in the second game of the afternoon.

The Mavericks took the lead in the first inning 1-0, but WIU could not find a way to plate a run to recover, dropping its first league game of the season.

The Leathernecks left a pair of base runners on in the second inning after Duwa drew a walk and Abbott singled. The Purple and Gold had the same situation in the third inning when Beatty singled and Ashley Minyard reached on an error but ended with the same result.

For the final time in the sixth inning, the Leathernecks put two runners on the base paths but could not do any damage.

WIU only managed four hits in the contest, with the last one being a pinch-hit single by Madison Boone. Carlin finished her seven innings of work with two strikeouts and one walk.

The rubber match between Western Illinois and Omaha is set for tomorrow (April 22) at 11 a.m.
