Leathernecks Complete Series Win Against Omaha, 7-1

Ira pitched a two-hit complete game

MACOMB, Ill.- Winners of eight out of their last nine contests, the Leathernecks put everything together on Sunday against Omaha winning the series rubber match, 7-1. After only putting up seven combined runs in the last three games, WIU's bats came alive in the third game of the series.

Emily Ira pitched her fifth-straight complete game, striking out six Mavericks and only allowing two hits. Ira's no-hit bid was ended in the seventh inning with an out. It was the second time this week Ira had pitched more than six innings of hitless softball. She was impressive at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Halle Hollatz cranked her fourth home run of the season in the second inning to capture the first lead of the game for the Leathernecks, 2-0. Ira's double followed later in the inning to score Payton Abbott and the Purple and Gold claimed a 3-0 lead going into the third inning.

With one out in the fourth inning. Sydney Hollings showed off her power by smacking a solo home run to left field that reached the trees behind the wall at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.

After plating a run in the fourth inning, the Leathernecks scored their final two runs of the series in the sixth frame. Ira led off the inning with a single and was brought home by Kelsey Marlow while Rachel Beatty crossed the plate after Hailey Duwa poked a single to center field.

The Mavericks put together two hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to salvage a run, but the comeback fell short.

Western Illinois is back on the diamond on Wednesday (April 25) against Missouri for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. inside Mary Ellen McKee Stadium.
