Clemens Named A Senior CLASS Award First Team All-American

The Muscatine, Iowa native was one of five seniors nationally named to the award.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Western Illinois senior guard Emily Clemens was selected as one of five women's basketball players in the nation to the Senior CLASS Award All-American First Team.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition.

"This is a huge accomplishment for Emily," said head coach JD Gravina. "The Senior CLASS Award is one of the most prestigious awards a college basketball player can earn, and it shows how respected Emily is."

Clemens, a marketing and sport management major with a 3.67 GPA, also landed on the Academic All-League Team for the second consecutive year. A two-time first team all-league selection, Clemens broke league records for career assists (687) and free throws made (558), while becoming the program's all-time leading scorer (1,699). She was named the ESPNW National Player of the Week (Dec. 26) and also became the first Leatherneck to surpass 1,000 points, 500 assists and 200 steals. Clemens led the league with 7.5 assists per game and 3.3 steals per game, while ranking second in points per contest (18.0).

The Muscatine, Iowa, native also attended the NCAA Career in Sports Forum last season in Indianapolis, and was also selected to the "So You Want To Be A Coach" program which is held by the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association (WBCA).
