Ira Continues Dominance In WIU's Loss To SEMO

Ira completed the game striking out nine, bringing her weekend total to 26.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.- The Western Illinois softball team fell 2-1 against Southeastern Missouri State in its final contest of the Frost Classic.  The Leathernecks won a pair of contests in the tournament on Saturday before dropping the Sunday matinee.

"Today was a tough one. Again, Emily (Ira) had a great showing on the mound with great defense behind her," said head coach Beth Golitko. "We were able to get on top early with some clutch hitting but we couldn't get the balls to fall late in the game. It was a hard battle between both team today, but we know what to do to finish on top next time."

Tied in the seventh inning at one run apiece, SEMO singled in up the middle with two outs to score the final run of the game. The Redhawks led the inning off with a double, for just their fourth hit of the matchup. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, SEMO hit a ball up the middle to plate the final run.

The Leathernecks held a 1-0 advantage in the sixth inning but the Redhawks put two runners on the base paths after an obstruction call on the Leathernecks. As the SEMO runner was advancing to second base, she stepped over the bag. WIU threw the ball to tag her out but the second baseman was called for obstruction. This put two runners on for the Redhawks and SEMO tied the game with a double to center field. Emily Ira struck out the next batter, ending the inning tied at one run.

The Purple and Gold struck first in the second inning after a leadoff double to left field off the bat of Ashley Minyard. With two outs, Kelsey Marlow singled and brought home Minyard to take the lead.

Rachel Beatty singled to center field to leadoff the sixth inning but was stranded after two fly outs.

Ira completed the game striking out nine, bringing her weekend total to 26. She only allowed five allowed hits in the outing this afternoon. Minyard, Marlow and Beatty recorded the only hits for the Leathernecks.

The Leathernecks travel to Auburn, Alabama for a five-game slate this weekend beginning on March 2.
