WIU Splits In Day One Of Wilson/Demarini Classic

The Leathernecks beat WCU, 8-0, but fell to UNCW, 3-2.

AUBURN, Ala.- The Leathernecks split decisions on Friday, beating Western Carolina, 8-0, and falling to UNCW, 3-2. WIU advanced their record to 5-11 heading into Saturday.

"We were happy to bounce back after game one. In the first game, we weren't able to come through in key situations. We were right there," said head coach Beth Golitko. "In game two, that is exactly what we were able to capitalize on. We never stopped pushing, especially with two outs. Our pitchers had good command on the mound in both games and we play solid defense. It was a good first day."

GAME ONE

With the game tied at two runs apiece in the top of the seventh inning, UNCW singled through the left side of the infield with two outs to score the go-ahead run.

Down to their last at-bats, Western Illinois saw Sam Ralphs record a bunt single in the bottom of the seventh. However, the Leathernecks couldn't plate her and fell 3-2.

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the forth inning after a leadoff walk, Hailey Duwa launched a two-run shot to right-center to tie the game at a pair.

UNCW scored the first run of the game in the first inning after a single up the middle and tacked on another run in the top of the third inning. With a runner on, the Seahawks doubled to center field to go up 2-0.

Duwa and Ashley Minyard each recorded a multi-hit game, with Duwa leading the team with 3 RBIs.

Abby Carlin pitched 6.0 innings, yielding two earned runs while registering two strikeouts. Megan Lotarski pitched the seventh inning and struck out a pair.

GAME TWO

Western Illinois rebounded from the morning loss and beat Western Carolina soundly, 8-0.

In a scoreless game, Rachel Beatty led off the top of the third inning with a single up the middle. Beatty advanced to second on a fielder's choice and moved to third after Payton Abbot lined a ball through the right side.

With runners on the corners, Halle Hollatz turned on the pitch and scorched a ball down the left field line to score two runs. Western Illinois was not done, however, as Minyard singled to left field and scored Hollatz to take a 3-0 lead after three innings.

The Purple and Gold added another run in the fourth inning after Jasmine Lara brought in Beatty on a single to right field.

The Leathernecks exploded again in the sixth inning when Beatty singled to right field with one out. After Lara drew a walk, Abbott advanced the runners on a ground ball. Hollatz plated Beatty to take a 5-0 advantage.

During the ensuing at-bat, Duwa singled in Lara to push the advantage to 6-0. Minyard then singled to load the bases. Kelsey Marlow drew a walk with the bases loaded for the Leathernecks' final run of the sixth inning.

The last run for Western Illinois came in the seventh inning with two outs. Lara walked and advanced to second base when the Catamounts were called for catcher's interference.

Hollatz singled through the left side to score Lara for WIU's last run of the game.

Emily Ira was impressive in the circle for the Leathernecks, as she pitched a complete game shutout and struck out 10 batters.

The Leathernecks continue play tomorrow against UNCW and Auburn.
