ST. GEORGE, Utah — Led by the efforts of Drew Eaton, the Western Illinois Leathernecks posted a sixth-place finish in the 2018 spring debut at the Southern Utah Pat Hicks Invitational.

"We played really well today after a sluggish start in the first round," said head coach Mel Blasi. "Drew Eaton had an excellent tournament and a top-10 finish. He made three eagles over the two rounds and without a couple of loose swings that really cost him, he would have been right at the top. Sean Miller had a very good round of 71 today and it was nice to see Jackson [Wetherbee] bounce back. It's always nice to get that first tournament of the spring under our belts. This will be a fun team to watch grow."

Overall, the Leathernecks finished sixth and posted a two-round total of 588 (+22), and improved 16 strokes on the second day. Utah Valley won the event, shooting a two-day total of  565 (281, 284, -11), and also posted an individual champion in Aaron Yeates, who posted a pair of 68s (138) to finish eight-under.

Eaton shot even-par over the two-day period, with a pair of 72s for a total of 144. His 144 put him at tied for 10th overall.

Sean Miller had a huge turnaround on the second day of the event, improving his previous score of a 78 down to a 71 on the second day to finish five-over at 149 and tie for 21st. Not far behind was freshman Trent Snodgrass, who shot a total of 151 (76, 75, +7) to tie for 25th.

After sitting in 50th place through the first day, Jackson Wetherbee, improved his first-round total by 13 places and 10 strokes, shooting a 73 (+1) on the second day to put him at +12 for the invitational (83, 73, 156).

Rounding out the team score tied for 44th was Dennis Reedy, who improved by three strokes on the second day to finish 15-over (81, 78, 159).

Competing as individuals, Kyle Irlbacker and John Duggan III finished tied for 32nd and 51st, respectively. Irbacker shot a two-round total of 155 (77, 78, +11) while Duggan III scored a 162 (82, 80, +18) over the rounds.

Western Illinois returns to action Feb. 26-27 in Woodlands, Texas, to compete in the Houston Baptist Colin Montgomery Invitational.
