Western Illinois Falls to Talented Drake Squad

The Leathernecks showed flashes, the Bulldogs win 98-71 inside Western Hall.

MACOMB, Ill.— Several young players performed well, but the Western Illinois (0-2) women's basketball team dropped a 98-71 decision to the Drake on Saturday, Nov. 10.

"We knew it would be tough," head coach JD Gravina said. "We hope it wouldn't go like that in the first half, but Drake is a really, really good team. They are a seven to ten seed in the NCAA tournament this year. They are kind of custom fit to match up with us and attack what we do."

Annabel Graettinger got things going behind the arc two minutes into the game with a triple to cut the early deficit to 7-5. After Sammie Bachrodt answered with a three for Drake, Grace Gilmore muscled in a layup down low to keep it at a one-possession lead 10-7, but that was as close as Western would be for the rest of the game. The Bulldogs pushed ahead for a 22-13 advantage, but Jinda Guidinger drained a jumper in the final thirty seconds as the purple and gold trailed by seven after the first quarter, 22-15.

From the 7:56 mark of the second quarter to 3:42 left in the first half, Drake embarked on a 15-0 run capped off by a Becca Jonas mid-range jumper for a 39-17 deficit. During the final two minutes of the second quarter, the Leathernecks offense woke up with back-to-back layups by Graettinger and a layup by Taylor Higginbotham, but the Bulldogs were in control, 51-27 at halftime.

Drake opened up the second half on a 10-0 run before Elizabeth Lutz drilled a three-pointer to end the scoring clip with Western behind 61-30. Halfway through the third quarter, Lutz connected on three consecutive treys to bring the score to 68-42 with 4:44 left on the clock. The high octane offensive production did not stop for the Bulldogs over the next quarter and a half as they left Macomb victorious, 98-71.

Lutz led Western Illinois in scoring with 15 points and was followed by Annabel Graettinger with 13 points while dishing out five assists. Jinda Guidinger ripped down a team-high 10 rebounds.

The Leathernecks conclude the first homestand of the season on Monday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. against MacMurray College.
