Leathernecks Fall at North Dakota

The Fighting Hawks score four second half goals in 5-0 win against Western Illinois.

EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. — The Western Illinois women's soccer team (2-9-1) suffered a 5-0 setback to North Dakota (8-2-1) on Tuesday, Oct. 4 as the Leathernecks fell to 0-3 in Summit League play. All North Dakota women's soccer home games this season switched venues to East Grand Forks Senior High School due to renovations at Bronson Field on campus.

The Leathernecks came out firing, Zoe Clarke's first shot was saved by the North Dakota goalkeeper in the eighth minute. Only two minutes later, Lauryn Peters rifled a shot on goal and it was corralled again. In the 29th minute, a shot by North Dakota's Olivia Knox rebounded to Mimi Eiden to knock it into the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead.

Brittany Mueller took the ball into the box and launched a shot into the corner of the net during the 48th minute as the North Dakota advantage doubled to 2-0. In the 68th minute, Veronica Kessler and Cassie Giddings teamed up for the assist to Olivia Knox to extend the Fighting Hawk lead to 3-0. Giddings put the ball into the back of the net on an individual effort during the 77th minute to put North Dakota ahead 4-0. Emma Bangert delivered the final goal of the match in the 81st minute.

The Leathernecks play host to South Dakota in the Kick for the Cure Game against South Dakota on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m.
