South Dakota Slides Past Western Illinois

A goal in the 81st minute sealed a 2-1 Coyote win over the Leathernecks in Summit League play.

MACOMB, Ill. — The Western Illinois women's soccer team (2-10-1, 0-4-0) took an early lead but surrendered two second half goals in a 2-1 loss to South Dakota (7-4-2, 2-1-0) on Sunday, Oct. 7. The game was played at the Northwest Playing Field on campus due to poor field conditions at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

"Proud of our effort today," Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson said. "South Dakota has a lot of good qualities on their squad and we made it very difficult for them. We need to battle every minute if we want to win a Summit League game."

The Leathernecks got on the board first in the 22nd minute when Lilly Butler passed the ball to Madeline Edwards outside of the box and Edwards struck it into the top left corner of the net. Down 1-0, South Dakota tried to answer as freshman Birgitta Sol Eggertsdottir made her first collegiate start in goal. She made two of her 10 total saves in the last five minutes of the first half as Western Illinois led 1-0 at halftime.

In the 62nd minute, Tiannah Moore broke away and sent a sliding pass to Taryn LaBree inside the box for the equalizer into the bottom left corner of the net. The Coyotes moved ahead in the 81st minute when Kellee Willer unassisted took the ball into the box and fired a shot into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead. Jenna Lundgren had the last shot on goal in the 89th minute, but it was corralled by the South Dakota goalkeeper to preserve the 2-1 score.

The Leathernecks head to Northern Iowa for a 5 p.m. match on Tuesday, Oct. 9 to close out non-league play.
