The Leathernecks battle the Fighting Hawks for the first time in the Summit League.

MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois women's soccer hits the road to take on North Dakota at East Grand Forks Senior High School on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 12 p.m. in East Grand Forks, Minn.

LAST TIME OUT:
The Western Illinois women's soccer team (2-8-1) allowed all three goals in the second half in a 3-0 loss to South Dakota State (6-4-1) on Sunday, Sept. 30. The Leathernecks are now 0-2 in Summit League play.

Both teams had five shots in the first half and the only Leatherneck shot on goal came in the 19th minute when Cassidy Grunewald sprinted up the field to the box, but her shot was knocked away by the South Dakota State keeper. Ines Palmiero Herrera picked up two saves back-to-back in the 41st minute and finished with six saves.

South Dakota State struck first in the 50th minute as Darien Poelstra scored after the ball deflected off a Western Illinois defender setting up a one on one matchup with Palmiero Herrera and Poelstra's shot went into the back of the net. Only a minute later, the Jackrabbits doubled their lead when Carina McLennan passed the ball to Karlee Manding in the box and she sent it into the left corner of the net. The Jackrabbit lead pushed to 3-0 in the 90th minute as Abigail Kastens fired a shot that bounced off the crossbar and into the back of the net.

SCOUTING THE FIGHTING HAWKS:
North Dakota is currently 7-2-1 after a 1-0 win at Oral Roberts on Sunday, Sept. 30 in the Summit League opener. The Fighting Hawks beat the Leathernecks 4-0 at Bronson Field in the last meeting as a non-conference game on Aug. 20, 2017.

Chris Logan is in his first season as the head coach of the Fighting Hawks after one year in charge of the Northern Iowa women's soccer program. Logan is no stranger to the Summit League, having spent four seasons as an assistant coach at North Dakota State. Senior forward Katie Moller is on the all-time leading scorers in program history and already has nine goals along with 22 total points this season. Senior goalkeeper Olivia Swenson has only allowed two goals this season and has racked up 40 saves.

PRIMEAU'S PREGAME QUOTE:
"We just completed our first weekend of Summit League games and they didn't go quite as we planned," assistant coach Josee Primeau said. "The girls fought hard in both games this weekend and we just couldn't keep a clean sheet. We have another tough opponent coming up with UND and they will not take us lightly. We have been preparing for the long trip and the girls have had good attitudes going into training this week so I hope we can get a win on the road."

LOOKING AHEAD:
The Leathernecks return to Macomb in a Summit League match against South Dakota at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7.
