Men's Golf Prepares for Final Fall Event at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate

The Leathernecks travel to New Mexico State to finish fall slate.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois men's golf team will compete at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate on Oct. 15-16. The event is hosted at the New Mexico State University Golf Course in Las Cruces, N.M. (Par 71, 7,242 yards).

QUOTABLE: 
" The men have been working hard despite the weather challenges we have faced the last couple of weeks," Director of Golf Lia Biehl Lukkarinen said. "If we play smart and make our usual amount of birdies we will be right in it."
 
LAST TIME OUT: 
The Western Illinois men's golf team concluded play at the Zach Johnson Invitational hosted by Drake on Tuesday, Oct. 2. The Leathernecks as a team shot a combined three-round score of 908 at Glen Oaks Country Club and finished in eighth place out of 12 teams.


Jackson Wetherbee led the way by shooting a team-low 71 in the third round for a total score of 219 (+7) to finish tied for seventh individually. John Duggan III finished in 27th place with a 76 during the final round for a combined 225 (+12).

Parker Govern turned in a 76 in the final round for a tournament score of 232 (+19). Cameron Karney fired a 78 on day two as he collected a 234 (+21). Wyatt Spier rounded out the group with a 243 (+30) after a career-low round of 76 in round three.
 
Bradley as a team won with a combined score of 879, seven strokes ahead of Summit League member and runner-up North Dakota State.  

TOURNAMENT FORMAT
36 holes on Monday (8:30 a.m. MT start)
18 holes on Tuesday (8:30 a.m. MT start)
 
COMPETING TEAMS:
Cal Baptist, Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, McMurry, NM State, Odessa JC, Oral Roberts, UTEP, UTRGV, Wichita State, Western Illinois and Western New Mexico.
 
ABOUT THE COURSE:
The New Mexico State Golf Course is one of the top facilities in the Southwest and has received major upgrades in the past couple of years that has improved on its already outstanding reputation.
 
The 18-hole layout covers 7,040 yards for men and 5,858 yards for women and is a par 72 course for men and 74 for women.
 
Included in the lengthy list of events that has kept the University Golf Course in the national spotlight are the 1968 NCAA Men's Championship, 1988 NCAA Women's Golf Championships, the 1990 NCAA Men's West Regional Golf Tournament, the 1971 AIAW National Championship, two Missouri Valley Conference Championships, two High Country Athletic Conference Championships, two Big West Championships and many other amateur competitions.
 
This spring the course will host the NCAA West Region Championships, May 5-7, 2005.
