Hagen, Kaftan Record Individual Wins Over Northern Iowa

Western Illinois women fall 187-102 in dual meet with Panthers

MEET RESULTS

MACOMB, Ill. –
Erica Hagen and Dana Kaftan each scored individual events Saturday (Jan. 20), but Western Illinois fell in their dual meet with Northern Iowa 187-102.

"Despite having some very difficult workouts the past couple of weeks over winter break and this past week, they are looking like their racing strategies and technique are starting to come around," said Western Illinois head coach Greg Naumann. "Our next couple of meets will be a little rough with the travel schedule out to Omaha and Vermillion, but we should see some even better racing from the team at both meets."

Hagen took two individual events. The Lisle, Ill., native dominated the 100-breast (1:05.26), winning by more than five seconds. She later inched out a win (2:17.18) by edging teammate Miranda Mathus (2:17.31) in the 200-IM. Hagen touched second in the 200-breast (2:31.78), and Mathus also eeked out second in both the 200-free (1:59.32) and 100-fly (1:01.53).

Kaftan rolled to a triumph in the 200-fly with a mark of 2:23.53. Senior Amy Borgstede placed second in 2:27.22.

The Leathernecks' 200-medley relay team of Taylor Winkel, Hagen, Mathus and Marissa Purdum touched first with a time of 1:50.78. Western Illinois' 200-free relay team of Kaftan, Allison DeWane, Casey Roberts and Purdum registered second at 1:42.90.

Western Illinois also had several swimmers place second in a variety of events. Amanda Schaefer placed second in the 1000-free (11:15.94). Winkel did the same in both the 100-back (1:03.38) and 200-back (2:20.34), and Purdum was narrowly beat for a second-place touch in the 50-free (25.13).

The Leatherneck women travel to Omaha on Friday (Jan. 26) for a dual meet with the Mavericks that starts at 4 p.m. Both the Western Illinois men and women compete in a 6 p.m. dual meet on Saturday (Jan. 27).
