Western Heads to Eastern

Western Illinois men's swimming and diving faces the rival EIU Panthers as the women's squad will also battle Butler in a tri-meet.

LEATHERNECK SWIMMING TRAVELS TO IN-STATE RIVAL
 
Both the Western Illinois men's and women's swimming and diving teams travel in-state to Charleston for events on Saturday (Feb. 1). The men have a dual with the host Panthers while the women are participating in a tri-meet with both Eastern Illinois and Butler (1 p.m. start).

LAST TIME IN THE POOL | After honoring the program's seven total seniors, Western Illinois swimming and diving, five of them won events in a dual meet against Truman State on Saturday (Jan. 25) inside Brophy Hall. The Leatherneck women's squad registered its first victory as a team this season.
 
Brennan Bladel took first place the 100-back (52.56) and fellow senior Connor Owens won the 100-breast (1:00.47).
 
Adam Peterson was victorious in the 50-free (21.22) and Tyler Cunningham grabbed the top spot in the 200-free (1:49.01). Despite those individual wins, Truman State won the men's dual by a score of 114-84.  
 
For the Western Illinois women, senior Miranda Mathus logged first in the 100-back (1:02.6). Her teammate Olivia Leslie finished in second place with a time of 1:02.81.
 
At the diving platform, Samantha Kessinger won for 1-meter diving (198.30) and Keelie Shuck had the best mark at 3-meter diving (183.90).
 
On Senior Day, Casey Roberts netted first place in both the 50-free (25.05) and the 100-free (56.34) en route to a 111-103 dual win over the visiting Bulldogs.  
 
POOL INFORMATION (FROM EIU ATHLETICS) | Padovan Pool serves as the home for Panther men's and women's swimming as the pool is 25 yards in length with six lanes for competitive swimming.  The facility is also used for local swim club competitions.
 
PEKIN'S FINEST | Adam Peterson of Western Illinois men's swimming and diving has been named Summit League Swimmer of the Week, the league announced Tuesday (Nov. 12). Peterson earned the first weekly award of his career and became the first Leatherneck men's athlete to earn Swimmer of the Week since teammate Brennan Bladel (Oct. 16, 2018).
 
A native of Pekin, Ill., Peterson was the only Western Illinois swimmer to win two events in Saturday's (Nov. 9) dual meet against Saint Louis. The sophomore touched first in the 50-free (21.06) before also winning the 100-free (47.69).

UP NEXT | Both the Leatherneck men's and women's teams travel west to Big Ten foe Iowa on Friday (Feb. 7) with events getting underway at 6 p.m.
