Volleyball Falls at Home Against Omaha

After a explosive second set, the Leathernecks couldn't quite fend off the Mavericks.

MACOMB-Ill.- The Western Illinois volleyball team exploded in the second set, but could not finish the match as it dropped a match on Sept. 29 to the Omaha Mavericks, 25-15, 25-21, 27-25, 25-15.

"This match just comes down to ourselves. We talked tonight about the serve and pass game and we had to win that aspect of the match. We just need to execute better," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "When you are in a tight match like the one tonight, it comes down to unforced errors. Those are just things that we need to be able to clean up.

The first set didn't go the way the Leathernecks wanted, but WIU was able to rebound in the second set to tie the match up at 1-1. In the second set, the Leathernecks jumped out to a quick 7-0 start in part to three consecutive kills by Emma Norris. The Purple and Gold eventually pushed the lead to 19-5, but the Mavericks closed the gap to 23-18. The Leathernecks put Omaha away with a kill by Jaime Johnson to win the set, 25-21.

Western carried the momentum gained in set two into the third set, by winning the first three points and going ahead 6-3. Mackenzie Steckler logged a kill and an ensuing ace to push the Leatherneck lead. Omaha won four straight points later in the set to help secure the set three victory for the Mavericks. Omaha carried its momentum from the previous set and was able to take set four, 25-15.

Steckler led the Leathernecks in kills in the match with 12 while hitting at a .286 clip. Johnson logged 27 assists against the Mavericks that was a Western best. Claire Grove added to her season total with 31 digs, followed by Norris with 31 and Shiah Sander's 11.

The Leathernecks have a week off before their next match as they play host to the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State Oct. 6 in Western Hall. The first serve is set for 7 p.m.
