Western Men Finish Strong At Louisville Classic

Lingle, Kaiser place in top 40 in event

LOUISVILLE – Both Lucas Lingle and Grant Kaiser finished in the top 40 in Saturday's (Sept. 30) Louisville Classic. The Western Illinois men finished 10th out of 11 Division I teams, while the women finished 37th.

Lingle raced to a 26:37.49 time in the 8k to come in 29th place. Kaiser took 39th in 26:56.87, while Ross Smetzer (27:40.63) placed 57th. Corey Moody (67th, 27:40.63), Harry Osborne (72nd, 28:32.77) and Quintin Thurman (75th, 30:28.85) also competed for the Leathernecks.

"The men out together a good race overall," said head coach Nick Maas. "Season-bests all around, and we are beginning to figure their identity out as a unit. The women tried something a little different and we struggled a little with the large crowd. We got bumped around a lot and were out of our element."

Abigail Richter became the first Western Illinois woman to cross the finish line in the 5k, taking 222nd in 18:51.66. Nicole Beebe etched 259th with a mark of 19:08.97, while Hailey Tranchitella came in 293rd by running to a 19:34.29 time. The Leathernecks also saw Jacey Roper (309th, 19:57.44) and Kristen Goben (328th, 22:32.18) compete in the event.

Western Illinois' final regular season meet comes at 2 p.m. on Oct. 13 at the Bradley Pink Classic in Peoria. The Summit League Championships are on Oct. 28 in Vermillion, S.D.

"This time of year is about testing ourselves against the best and seeing what our limitations are," Maas said. "In two weeks, we will get back to business at Bradley and run a championship-style strategy, working as a group."
