MACOMB, Ill.— It was a record-setting day for the Western Illinois women's soccer program Sunday (Sept. 17), as the Leathernecks picked up their first win of the season with a 9-1 triumph over Chicago State at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

Western Illinois (1-7-0) scored a program-record nine goals, breaking the previous record of eight against Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Aug. 24, 2012. Within five minutes of the match beginning, a Chicago State red card put the Cougars down a player for the remainder of the match.

The Leathernecks were able to exploit the Cougar defense and get things started with a 17th-minute goal by Bianca Romay off an assist from Madeline Edwards. Six minutes later, Edwards was able to net her first goal of the season off an assist from Lauryn Peters.

In the 27th minute, Romay netted her second goal of the season—recording her first multi-goal game—after she was able to get a breakaway off a through ball from Natalie Nagle and lob the ball over the charging keeper. Shortly after, Bollman scored on an unassisted goal to make it a 4-0 match. Just before the half, Western made it a 5-0 match when Bollman rocketed a shot that nailed the crossbar, only for Kayla Kirkwood to clean up rebound with a ricochet off the left post and into the back of the net.

"Obviously, it was tough for them off that red card, which made our big field even bigger," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We've been struggling on the road and it was nice to be back home and see the way our team came out determined today. We took advantage of our chances so we are pleased to see our team pick up the win. Hopefully we can get better on both directors in defense and the attack."

In the opening minute of the second half, Carly Hoffman gave Western Illinois a 6-0 lead off her header that was assisted by Romay. The Leathernecks eventually extended their lead to 7-0 in the 61st minute, when Peters netted her first goal of the season off an assist from Nagle.

Bollman recorded her second goal of the match in the 73rd minute off an assist from Devan Jones inside the box. The Cougars were able to get on the board in the 78th minute off a 19-yard shot that sailed just under the crossbar and into the net, but Western was able to respond quickly when Jenna Lundgren scored her first career goal off a breakaway, shooting it past the keeper.

The Leathernecks look to carry their momentum into the next match, as they will take the pitch Sept. 24 at home against Drake for a 1 p.m. first touch.

PROGRAM NOTES:
-Nine goals are the most in program history for a single match… the previous record was eight against Arkansas Pine Bluff (Aug. 24, 2012)… Western's 44 shots are the most in program history… the previous record was 42 at Jackson State (Sept. 3, 2012)… WIU's seven assists are third-all time in program history for a single match… Their 21 shots on goal are tied for third all-time in program history… This was the Leathernecks' biggest win since an 8-0 victory over Arkansas Pine Bluff (Aug. 24, 2012)…

-Bianca Romay and Emily Bollman both had two goals and one assist… That ties for third all-time in program history for most points by an individual player…
