Second Half Goals Propel Western Over Kansas City

Fernando Pacheco had two goals and Tim Trilk had a career-high eight saves.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A pair of goals by Fernando Pacheco gave Western Illinois the spark it needed to hand Kansas City its first defeat of the season with a 3-2 result on Saturday (Sept. 16).

The Leathernecks fell into an early hole after a UMKC goal in the 16th minute, but they were able to respond when Pacheco netted his fourth goal of the season (23') off a cross from his brother Alejandro Pacheco for the assist.

Pacheco's equalizer notched the score at 1-1 after the first half.

Western was able to take the lead in the 61st minute off the foot of Drew Whalen when he found the back of the net off an assist by Paul Kirdorf. Following a red card by UMKC, the Leathernecks were able to take a 3-1 cushion off a penalty kick goal by Pacheco, his second of the match.

The Kangaroos were able to net a goal in the 89th minute, but the Leathernecks were able to come away with the road win. Along with his two goals, Pacheco finished with three shots on goal, while Paul Kirdorf had a match-high four shots and one assist on Whalen's goal. Ben Fiddes also totaled three shots on goal for the match.

"We fell into a deficit after giving up the early goal, but I thought we responded very well. Kansas City is a very talented and dangerous team, and I thought we were able to get a good equalizer off Fernando's goal from his brother. I also thought Drew's goal really helped us get the momentum we needed off a good pass from Paul (Kirdorf). This game was really a good showing of the way we were able to pick ourselves up and improve on the things we needed to work on."

In net, Tim Trilk finished with a career-high eight saves. In total, the Purple and Gold recorded 17 shots to UMKC's 15. With the road slate concluded, Western Illinois now returns for its home opener Sept. 20 against Drake. The teams will take to the pitch for a 4 p.m. scheduled first touch.
