The Western Illinois volleyball team (5-6) fell 3-1 to the Saint Louis Billikens (1-9) on Tuesday night in Western Hall. The Leathernecks were able to take the first set but were unable to maintain the momentum throughout the match.

"We struggled to find our momentum coming out and when that happens, there has to be a better sense of urgency to make an immediate change and focus in on the details. Unfortunately, we were not able to do that tonight," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "We looked very individual instead of looking like a team and when that happens, other teams are able to capture that momentum and it is hard to get that back."

The Purple and Gold started strong in the first set, due to kills by Shalyn Greenhaw and Emilee Dechant. The Billikens rebounded to gain a lead later in the set, 14-13, but the Leathernecks scored three points in a row to capture the lead. Down 25-24, Western put together another three kills in a row by Greenhaw, Emma Norris and Claire Grove to win 27-25.

The Leathernecks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set, but Saint Louis took seven of eight points to go ahead 11-8. Three Western points pulled the Leathernecks within three to 16-13, but four ensuing Billiken points stopped the run. In the third set, the Leathernecks kept the set close the entire time until the Billikens won the last four points to win the set.

Western looked to rally in the fourth set but Sien Gallop of Saint Louis recorded four of her six service aces that put a damper on the effort. Greenhaw led the team with 13 kills, while Mackenzie Steckler continued to display her hot hand by hitting at a .333 clip. Grove's 16 digs led the Leathernecks and Jaime Johnson's 29 assists were a team-best.

The Leathernecks look to rebound against Valparaiso in their first match of the Buffalo Wild Wings Invitational. Western plays host to its second tournament of the season Sept. 15-16 in the Buffalo Wild Wings Invitational. McNeese and Drake will join Valparaiso in competition in the tournament.
