Men’s Soccer Edged 1-0 At Milwaukee Off Late Goal

The Leathernecks dropped their season opener to the Panthers.

MACOMB, Ill. — A late goal off a header for the Milwaukee Panthers resulted in a 1-0 defeat for the Fighting Leatherneck men's soccer program for its season opener Friday (Aug. 25).

The Leathernecks (0-1-0), got things started with a shot by Paul Kirdorf in the 30th minute that was saved, followed by a header by Drew Whalen that went wide right in the 37th minute. It was not until the 80th minute where the Leathernecks found their opportunity when Milwaukee picked up a red card to leave themselves down a player. Western Illinois unfortunately could not capitalize on the advantage, as the Panthers were able to take a 1-0 lead just four minutes later off a free kick that found the head of Vuk Latinovich, who found the head of Henrik Fennefoss for the goal.

The Purple and Gold tried to capitalize and erase the deficit after Whalen's header shot in the 85th minute and Kirdorf's shot in the 86th minute, but they were both saved.

In net, goalkeeper Tim Hansen totaled seven saves, while Paul Kirdorf led the way with three shots and two on goal. Whalen totaled a pair of shots in the contest. Western was outshot 18-6 with an 8-2 shots-on-goal deficit.

"I am proud of our effort tonight," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson." We were organized for most of the game. We have work to do going forward in the attack. Milwaukee really raised their level when they went down a man and we squandered an opportunity to get a result on the road."

The Leathernecks have a quick turnaround, as they will stay in Wisconsin to face Green Bay this Sunday (Aug. 27) and take the pitch for a 1 p.m. kick.
