Leathernecks Drop Game Two at SDSU

Mitch Ellis recorded his second consecutive three-hit game.

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Mitch Ellis recorded three hits for the second straight game, and Drue Galassi and Adam McGinnis hit back-to-back homers, but Western Illinois dropped game two of the weekend series at South Dakota State. The Leathernecks' five-game win streak ended following an 18-8 loss in eight innings Saturday afternoon (May 6).

Western (18-24 overall, 12-9 Summit League) was able to turn a double play in the first inning, however, SDSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead using two errors, a ground-rule double and walk. The Jackrabbits exploded for five runs in the third inning, taking advantage of two walks and four singles to go ahead 8-0. Then Western began a rally in the next half inning.

For the second time this year, and third for the team, Galassi and McGinnis hit back-to-back home runs making it 8-2. Two outs later, Deion Thompson was hit by a pitch, stole second and went to third on a single by Roman Visintine. Ellis singled home a run, then the Leathernecks took advantage of three straight walks to Dave Dobrinich, Steve McShane and Galassi to make it an 8-5 score.

The Jackrabbits put another five runs up on the board in the fifth inning. Three consecutive doubles, and four in a five at-bat stretch extended the lead to 13-5. Western got another three runs in the seventh.

McGinnis lined a leadoff double. Two batters later another two-out rally continued when Deion Thompson walked followed by a Visintine double to right field. Ellis made it back-to-back doubles with a two-RBI hit to center field making it 13-8.

Solo home runs by SDSU (18-22, 11-12) during its half of the sixth and seventh inning made the score 15-8. Three runs in the bottom of the eighth finished off the game.

Ellis recorded his second straight 3-hit game, finishing 3-for-4 and season-high three RBI. Visintine, McGinnis and Galassi added two hits apiece.

Connor Rektorski (0-3) gave up three unearned runs in the first inning, suffering the defeat.

Six Jackrabbits finished with a multi-hit game. Derek Fiege (4-2) gave up three runs on four hits in 3.1 innings to earn the win.

Game three of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
