Leathernecks Lose Finale on Walk-Off

Adam McGinnis hit two 3-run homers and Drue Galassi hit game-tying homer in the ninth

BROOKINGS, S.D.Adam McGinnis hit a pair of 3-run home runs and Drue Galassi tied the game on a solo shot with two outs in the ninth, but South Dakota State used a two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth to win 8-7 on Sunday afternoon. The Leathernecks dropped to 18-25 overall and 12-10 in the Summit League.

SDSU (19-22, 12-12) used a two-out rally in the first and second inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Newt Johnson hit a RBI ground-rule double in the first then Tony Kjolsing hit a 2-run single in the second. The lead grew to 6-0 in the third when Matt Johnson hit a solo HR then two more runs came around on a sacrifice bunt and RBI triple.

Western cut the deficit in half during the fifth. With one out, Steve McShane and Galassi were each hit by a pitch in consecutive at-bats. McGinnis followed with his first 3-run homer making it 6-3.

The Jackrabbits added a sacrifice fly in their half of the fifth for a four-run advantage. During the seventh inning another hit by pitch started Western's rally.

McShane got hit by a pitch again, then Galassi singled in front of McGinnis. The senior smacked his second 3-run homer of the game to make it a 7-6 score. It was his first career multi-home run game and set a new personal-best with six RBIs.

SDSU brought in their closer Chris Halbur (2-0) in the seventh and he shut down Western until the final out. Halbur, who had allowed just one run all year long, saw Galassi take him out of the ballpark on a 1-0 pitch to tie the game at 7-all. It was the team-leading eighth home run for the redshirt-freshman outfielder.

Sam Cottingham-Beard (1-2) entered his fourth inning of work in the ninth. He got the first two outs of the ninth on a flyball and groundout. Landon Badger walked on a 3-2 pitch, stole second base and scored on Skyler Wenninger's walk-off single.

McGinnis finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and his six RBIs. Galassi scored three times going 2-for-4. McShane scored twice as the top three hitters in Western's lineup accounted for five of the seven hits and all the RBIs and runs scored.

Cottingham-Beard allowed one run on a hit in 3.2 innings, walking four and striking out three. Nate Westfahl entered in relief of Javin Drake and gave up a run on two hits in 3.0 innings. He walked two and struck out three.

Three Jackrabbits had a multi-hit game. Halbur did not walk a batter in his 2.2 innings and fanned five. Ethan Kenkel and Bryce Hanson each gave up three earned runs.

Western returns to action on Friday (May 12), opening a three-game series at North Dakota State. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
