Softball Wins Game Three to Take Series at Fort Wayne Sunday

The Leathernecks improved to 7-2 in league play with a 6-0 shutout of the Mastodons

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Western Illinois softball won its series over Fort Wayne after shutting out the Mastodons 6-0 on Sunday (April 9). Western grabbed an early lead and never looked back behind a strong, shutout performance from pitcher Emily Ira.

The Leathernecks improved to 7-2 in Summit League play and 16-21 overall after the win. Fort Wayne falls to 8-28 on the year and 1-5 in league action.

"Our goal is to win every series," head coach Holly Van Vlymen said. "It was nice to come out today and win. Emily Ira did a nice job and the defense did a nice job behind her. It was nice to have Taylor Messer come through. I think it just puts everyone at ease and we can relax a bit when we score early."

On her birthday, Taylor Messer cranked her third home run of the season, a two-run homer over the left field fence to put Western on top 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning.

Aly Compton, who scored on Messer's home run, hit a home run of her own in the fourth inning to put WIU up 3-0.

The Leathernecks blew the game open and grabbed a 6-0 advantage in the top of the fifth. Rachel Beatty kicked things off with a double before scoring the first run of the inning on a Kelsey Marlow single to center. Compton then singled up the middle, which moved Marlow to third before a throwing error from the centerfielder eventually sent her in to score. Hailey Duwa joined the hit parade by pulling an RBI single to right field sending Compton in to score to cap off the scoring for the Leathernecks.

Ira mixed things up in the circle and it worked. She only allowed three hits all game and was never bothered when runners were on base. While finishing things up in the bottom of the seventh, Ira hit the lead off batter but rebounded to retire the next three batters, which included one of her seven strikeouts.

Compton went a perfect 4-4 at the plate including the home run and three singles. Duwa recorded two hits and an RBI, while Beatty smashed two doubles in the game. Marlow was patient at the plate drawing two walks and picking up an RBI.

The Leathernecks have a quick turnaround as they visit Mizzou on Tuesday (April 11) for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
