Johnathan Fleek matched a season-high of three hits

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Johnathan Fleek matched a season-high of three hits, but SIU-Edwardsville came away with a 9-3 non-conference decision on Tuesday night (April 4).

Roman Visintine lined a one-out double down the left field line in the first. Adam McGinnis hit a hard liner up the middle but starting pitcher Brendan Miller snared it and retired him at first and kept the run from scoring.

Fleek singled to start the second, but he was retired on a double play and that started the streak of 17 consecutive batters retired by the Cougars (15-13 overall).

SIUE staged a two-out rally in the third to take a 5-0 lead. Jimmy Perkins worked around a leadoff infield single to get two quick outs. He was ahead 0-2 but missed on getting a called third strike and walked Jared McCunn. An infield popup drifted and eventually dropped for a RBI single.

Another walk loaded the bases then Jordan Stading hit a triple off the top of the fence to clear the bases. A throwing error allowed the fifth run to score in the frame.

The Cougars added two runs in the fifth on a passed ball and RBI single to make it 7-0. SIUE's leadoff batter in the sixth reached on an error and eventually loaded the bases with no one out. Two straight grounders extended the lead to 9-0.

Fleek recorded his seventh multi-hit game of the season when he reached on an infield single in the eighth.

Conner Currier started the ninth with a walk. Two batters later McGinnis walked then Chris Tschida singled to load the bases. Fleek matched his season-high of three hits with a RBI single through the left side. Nick Schrader lined a sacrifice fly then Austin Emanuel recorded his first collegiate RBI with a single to make it 9-3.

Perkins (2-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits in three innings. The four WIU (7-19) pitchers combined for 10 walks and eight hits.

Brendan Miller (1-1) allowed two hits in five innings. Stading finished with a game-high four RBI.

Western continues Summit League play this weekend at Omaha. The three-game series begins Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
