Leathernecks Edged 1-0 By Oral Roberts In Extra Innings

The Leathernecks dropped the weekend finale to ORU

TULSA, Okla. – Western Illinois dropped a 1-0 contest in extra innings at Oral Roberts in the third meeting of the series at Oral Roberts on Sunday (April 2).

"The biggest thing to take away is that we're right there with them," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "I think our guys feel that way too and it's obviously hard when you're on the road. If we keep playing the way we're playing, we know that good things will happen to us. The box score isn't going to show but I thought we outplayed them and gave ourselves every opportunity to win the game. Our effort was tremendous."Ā

The six runs allowed to ORU over the three-game weekend was the lowest amount ever allowed to the Golden Eagles in a conference series all-time.
Ā
It was not until the top of the fourth, when Roman Visintine recorded the first hit of the game with a single down the right field line. The Leathernecks tried to put Visintine in scoring position, but he was caught stealing which closed out the half inning.
Ā
The Leathernecks (7-18 overall, 4-5 Summit League) held Oral Roberts (19-8, 8-1) scoreless through the fourth inning, courtesy of a Deion Thompson throw to Chris Tschida at first to beat the runner just in time, followed by Javin Drake's third strikeout of the day.
Ā
Jonathan Fleek opened the fifth with a single up the middle to get on base, but was caught stealing while heading to second.
Ā
The Golden Eagles put runners in scoring position off a shot to left center, followed by a bunt. Shortly after, Oral Roberts launched a ball to left field, but Cord Church was there for the catch to erase the potential Golden Eagle run and keep the game tied at 0-0.
Ā
In the bottom of the bottom of the sixth, Oral Roberts put a runner on first with one out, but the Leathernecks were able to retire the inning after Thompson laid out for a diving catch and fired a throw to Tschida at first for the double play.
Ā
Adam McGinnis singled in the top of the seventh with one out and then the Leathernecks found themselves in scoring position after Tschida was walked. The Golden Eagles, however, were able to leave Western's runners stranded and keep the game scoreless.
Ā
In the top of the eighth, Western put itself in scoring position after Mitch Ellis singled. Cord Church followed with a double to left center, but Ellis was thrown out as he slid into third. ORU was able to get a strikeout to retire the Leathernecks for the inning.
Ā
Oral Roberts was able to advance a runner to second off a wild pitch, but a fly out to Church retired the eighth with the game still scoreless. Ā Ā
Ā
Western saw some late momentum in the top of the ninth when Tschida grounded to shortstop and beat the throw at first with two outs. Fleek followed up and made contact, but popped up to first to end the half inning.
Ā
The Leathernecks got things started in the top of the 10th when Conner Currier singled to left field, but he was caught stealing for the third out. Oral Roberts loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 10th.
Ā
The winning run came off a Golden Eagle batter being hit by the pitch to advance the runner on third to home.

Drake pitched a career-high eight shutout innings, scattering four hits and striking out four. He has now gone 17.0 innings without allowing a run. Connor Rektorski (0-1) suffered the loss after getting charged for a run on one hit in 1.1 innings. Seven different Leathernecks recorded a hit as Western out-hit ORU 7-5.

Kyler Stout (2-0) recorded the win going 1.2 innings of relief. Miguel Ausua allowed five hits and two walks in 8.1 innings.
Ā
Western Illinois will return on the road for a Tuesday (April 4) matchup against SIU-Edwardsville before heading to Omaha (April 7-9) for a Summit League series. Ā
