WIU Softball Sweeps Omaha in Doubleheader, Holly Van Vlymen Earns 250th Career Win

The Leathernecks took game one 5-3 to give coach Van Vlymen career win #250 before winning game two 4-1 in eight innings

LINCOLN, Neb. – Western Illinois softball continued Summit League play against the Omaha Mavericks in Lincoln, Neb. Saturday (April 1), sweeping UNO in a doubleheader. The Leathernecks took game one 5-3 to give head coach Holly Van Vlymen career win No. 250 before winning game two 4-1 in eight innings.
 
The Leathernecks improve to 13-20 overall and 4-1 in league action after the pair of victories, while Omaha drops to 9-22 and 0-2 in league play.
 
GAME ONE : WIU 5, UNO 3
 
WIU opened the scoring in the third inning when Emily Ira hit an RBI single to score Holly Hoelting who had previously reached on a double.
 
In the top of the fifth inning Nina Maggio reached first base after getting hit by a pitch. Kelsey Marlow then singled to move Maggio over to second, before Maggio scored after back-to-back illegal pitches to give the Leathernecks a 2-0 advantage.
 
Omaha captured the lead when the Mavericks hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning after getting two runners on base.
 
The Leathernecks quickly rallied in the top of the seventh inning by scoring a pair of runs, which eventually proved to be the difference. Hoelting was hit by a pitch to reach first base, Brooke Stulga reached on an error and Meghan Henson walked to load the bases. With two outs, Halle Hollatz hit a 2-run single to give WIU its 5-3 lead.
 
Ira picked up the win and pitched a complete game, going all seven innings and recorded 13 strikeouts. She gave up three runs on four hits.
 
Six Leathernecks recorded a hit in Rachel Beatty, Maggio, Marlow, Hoelting, Ira and Hollatz. Hoelting finished 1-for-1 at the plate with one hit and two walks. Hollatz's two RBIs led the team.
 
GAME TWO: WIU 4, UNO 1
 
Omaha grabbed an early 1-0 lead in game two of the doubleheader when the Mavericks scored on an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.
 
The Leathernecks were able to tie the game in the fifth when Stulga singled to lead-off the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Taylor Messer and was then driven home on a Hollatz RBI single to center field.
 
After finishing the seventh still tied 1-1, WIU scored three runs in the top of the eighth and closed out the game in the bottom of the inning for the win. The Leathernecks hit five straight singles courtesy of Beatty, Maggio, Marlow, Hoelting and Stulga to score three runs and sweep the doubleheader with a 4-1 win.
 
Stulga grabbed the win and pitched a complete game, going eight innings and giving up one run on seven hits.
 
Marlow and Stulga each finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored to lead Western. Beatty, Maggio, Hoelting, Hollatz, Compton and Lara all finished with one hit.
 
Game three of the series is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday and will take place in Lincoln, Neb. at Bowlin Stadium.
