Leatherneck Softball Completes Series Sweep of Omaha Sunday

Western Illinois topped the UNO Mavericks 5-1 and improve to 5-1 in Summit League play

LINCOLN, Neb. – Western Illinois grabbed an early advantage and never gave it up as the Leathernecks completed the series sweep of Omaha with a 5-1 victory Sunday (April 2) in Lincoln. It marks the first time in program history that WIU has swept Omaha in a series.

"I'm so proud of our team's performance this weekend," said head coach Holly Van Vlymen with an emphasis on the word team. "Everyone on the team contributed to our wins and came through when we needed them to in all aspects of the game. Starting league play and winning the first two series is a good start. We still have a lot of the season left so we have to continue to get better every weekend. We need to keep playing with confidence and continue to work hard everyday both in practices and in games."

Western improved to 5-1 in Summit League play (14-20 overall) after the win, while Omaha begins league action 0-3 and drops to 9-23. The Leathernecks' 5-1 start to league play in the program's best since they started the 2012 season 6-0.

The Leathernecks grabbed the 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning thanks to Halle Hollatz and Aly Compton. Hollatz hit a leadoff single before Compton crushed her first home run of the season to give WIU the early advantage.

Omaha scored its lone run in the fourth inning thanks to a 2-out, RBI double from Kelly Pattison.

In the top of the fifth inning Western responded to UNO's run with two more of its own. With one out, Nina Maggio and Kelsey Marlow each hit singles and Holly Hoelting walked to load the bases. Hollatz then singled to center field, plating Maggio and Marlow and giving the Leathernecks a 4-1 lead.

WIU added an insurance run to make it 5-1 in the top of the sixth after Taylor Messer led things off with a double to center field. Amanda Manton came in as a pinch runner and eventually scored after a Payton Abbott single and Jasmine Lara reaching on an error.

Abbott earned the win in the circle for Western, pitching a complete game. She gave up one run on two hits, and struck out nine batters without surrendering a walk.

Three Leathernecks finished with two hits to lead WIU at the plate. Hollatz went 2-for-3 with two hits, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored.  Abbott went 2-for-3 and Maggio went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Compton picked up WIU's two other RBIs with her home run in the fifth inning. Messer recorded Western's only other extra base hit, a double in the sixth.

UNO was led by Pittison who tallied one of the Mavericks' two hits and their lone RBI.

Western Illinois will look to continue its hot Summit League start at Fort Wayne next weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 8, at 12 p.m. and a single game on Sunday.
