Softball Walks-Off Northern Illinois, Blanks UIC

Leathernecks victorious on final day of Coach B Classic

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Western Illinois softball team picked up two victories on the final day of the Coach B Classic on Sunday (March 5). Hailey Duwa delivered a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to come back and top Northern Illinois by a score of 2-1 before a strong pitching performance from Payton Abbott blanked UIC, 1-0. With the wins, the Leathernecks improve to 6-11 on the season.

GAME ONE: Western Illinois 2, Northern Illinois 1

Both sides remained scoreless until the top of the fourth when Northern Illinois hit an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.

Western Illinois did not collect its first hit of the game until the bottom of the sixth inning. After Rachel Beatty walked and moved to second following a sacrifice bunt from Nina Maggio, she crossed home plate when Holly Hoelting launched a double to left field to tie the game, 1-1.

In the top of the seventh, the Leathernecks sent the Huskies down in order behind a strikeout from Emily Ira. Ira then stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning and hit a double. With two-outs, pinch hitter Hailey Duwa hit a walk-off infield single that scored Ira and gave the Leathernecks a 2-1 victory.

Ira pitched a complete seven innings, giving up only two hits, no earned runs and striking out six.

GAME TWO: Western Illinois 1, UIC 0

It was a pitcher's dual as both sides only collected a combined four hits throughout the entire contest. After UIC hit a double in the bottom of the second, neither side connected until Aly Compton hit a single in the top of the sixth.

The top of the seventh saw both teams scoreless. After Kelsey Marlow drew a leadoff walk, she scored all the way from first base after Duwa launched an RBI double up the right side to put Western on the board and ahead 1-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Leathernecks retired the Flames in order to seal the 1-0 shutout.

Abbott made the start in the circle, pitching her first career complete game with a career-high nine strikeouts, giving up only two hits and one walk.

The Leathernecks now prepare to open their spring break trip at the Memphis Invitational from March 10-12.
