Jimmy Perkins earned his first win as a Leatherneck and Connor Rektorski earned his first save as they combined on a two-hit shutout and 9-0 victory over St. Ambrose. The Leathernecks have won three-of-four to start their eight game homestand.

The Fighting Bees got a one out walk in the first, then Perkins started to get into a groove. He retired the next two batters he faced, hit the leadoff batter in the second then got a 6-4-3 double play. SAU's first hit came with one out in the third, but once again Perkins induced a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.

He retired the last nine batters he faced in order, and Rektorski extended the streak. He allowed a one-out walk, but catcher CJ Schaeffer would pick the runner off first base. The freshman right-hander set down five in a row before the Bees got a one out single in the ninth. In all, Western took advantage of the double play balls and a pickoff to retire 24 consecutive Bees. Overall the Leathernecks faced just two batters over the minimum.

"I told the guys after the game that's probably, especially pitching wise, as good as a performance as we have had in the middle of the week since I've been here. For Perk (Perkins) to do that… we missed Perk early, he banged his back up in the preseason so he missed about two weeks. When we threw him out there the first weekend he was about two weeks behind everybody. Last week at SLU he kind of looked how he was last year so you knew he was about ready. He's got great stuff," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "Rektorski is not far behind and Rekto has been really good in his role."

While the pitching and defense were stellar, the offense took advantage of its opportunities, utilizing 11 walks, seven hits, three errors and four wild pitches.

Mitch Ellis delivered a RBI single in the second, then in the third Roman Visintine walked and used a balk and two wild pitches to score.

Chris Tschida and Conner Currier came through with consecutive RBI singles in the fourth to make it 4-0. Tschida took off from first on the hit by Currier, made it to third then scored when the outfield lost track of the runner.

Tschida scored in the sixth on a throwing error by the catcher when he went for third on a wild pitch. During a three-run seventh inning, Steve McShane walked, stole two bases and scored on a wild pitch. Johnathan Fleek delivered a RBI groundout and pinch-hitting Cord Church lined a RBI single to make it 8-0. Schaeffer walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch in the eighth for the final margin.

Seven different Leathernecks (4-14 overall) recorded a hit. Tschida scored two runs.

Perkins (1-0) walked one and set career-highs with six innings pitched and four strikeouts. Rektorski pitched a season-high three innings and struck out two.

"It was nice because we were able to get a lot of different guys in too, you know get some guys off their feet. We scored in every inning but one, again that's as complete of a game we have had all year. You knew it was coming and hopefully we can just continue and stay with the right mindset going into this weekend because it's in there we just have to show up everyday," stated Brownlee.

Tyler Broomer (0-1) allowed a run on three hits in two innings for St. Ambrose (4-16).

Western continues its homestand this weekend with a Summit League series against North Dakota State. First pitch on Friday is tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m.
