Late Innings Prove Costly for Leathernecks

Scoreless tie after six innings eventually results in 5-1 defeat

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois missed on a few opportunities in the early half of the game, and Fort Wayne broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning to eventually get a 5-1 decision on Saturday afternoon at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

Preston Church worked out of two runners on situation in the first inning and a bases loaded jam in the second to keep the Mastodons off the scoreboard. In the fourth, Church issued two walks, but catcher Adam McGinnis threw out both runners trying to steal. Fort Wayne put two more runners on in the sixth, but Church threw another scoreless frame. Jordan Martin saw Western threaten with opportunities but also matched Church with scoreless frames.

The Leathernecks loaded the bases in the first with two outs, all without a hit, but could not get a two-out hit to plate a run. Deion Thompson singled in the second, and took second on a balk, but was stranded. Roman Visintine lined his sixth career triple to start the third, but would eventually get erased on a fielder's choice.

Drue Galassi, Justin Fitzpatrick and Visintine all singled in the fifth but Martin (1-2) kept WIU scoreless. Fort Wayne broke through in the seventh.

Relief pitcher J.T. Baksha (0-3) gave up two singles and a walk to start the inning. Matthew Sturchio entered in relief. An error allowed the game's first run to score. A fielder's choice and sacrifice fly made it 3-0.

Galassi reached on a one out single in the seventh. He scored when pinch-hitter Cord Church doubled with two outs.

Sturchio got the first two outs of the eighth, but a double followed by three singles made it 5-1 Mastodons. Pete Minella took advantage of a double play to pitch a scoreless ninth inning.

Visintine, Galassi and Johnathan Fleek had two hits apiece.

Preston Church gave up three hits in six scoreless innings. He struck out four and walked seven.

Martin scattered six hits in six innings. Damian Helm allowed a run on three hits in three innings to earn his first save of the year. Four Mastodons had two hits in the game.

Western will go for the series win on Sunday afternoon (March 19), first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
