Softball Tops Green Bay, Falls to Loyola-Chicago on Opening Day

Leathernecks back in action tomorrow for day two of the Total Control Sports Invitational

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Western Illinois softball team split two games to open the 2017 campaign on Friday (Feb. 10) at the Total Control Sports Invitational. The Leathernecks cruised past Green Bay by a score of 8-2 before being edged out by Loyola-Chicago 3-2.

GAME ONE: Western Illinois 8, Green Bay 2

Rachel Beatty was the first Leatherneck on base this season as she smashed a ground-rule double to center field. She then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Nina Maggio and scored on a sacrifice fly from Kelsey Marlow to give Western a 1-0 lead.

The Phoenix did not collect their first hit until the bottom of the fourth inning as starting Leatherneck pitcher Brooke Stulga and the defense retired the first 11 batters.

In the top of the fifth, Beatty drew a walk and then stole second base. She then advanced to third after Maggio fouled out and scored on a wild pitch to extend WIU's lead to 2-0.

Holly Hoelting drew a leadoff walk in the top of the sixth to bring on freshman Brittanee Knepper to pinch run. After Knepper advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third, she scored after a Payton Abbott single to left center.

The bats came alive for Western after that as Halle Hollatz singled up the middle in her freshman debut. After Meghan Henson reached first after being hit by a pitch, Stulga reached on a fielder's choice. Beatty then brought in Hollatz and Henson with a two-RBI double to right field. Both Beatty and Stulga would score following a two-RBI double from Maggio. Marlow then brought Maggio home following her second sacrifice fly of the game. At the end of the sixth inning, the Leathernecks led 8-0.

Green Bay tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but they weren't able to catch the Leathernecks as they cruised to an 8-2 season-opening victory.

Beatty went 3-for-4 with three hits, including two doubles, two RBIs, a walk and one stolen base. Both Maggio and Marlow contributed with two RBIs apiece, while Hoelting went 2-for-3. Stulga chalked up a tally in the win column after pitching six innings with five hits, two earned runs and three strikeouts.

GAME TWO: Loyola-Chicago 3, Western Illinois 2

Beatty hit a leadoff single and then advanced to second on a fielding error before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt by Maggio. Beatty crossed home plate after Hoelting launched a single to left field, giving Western an early 1-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Emily Ira reached first on an error then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Maggio then stepped up and singled down the left field line to score Ira and the Leathernecks lead 2-0.

The Ramblers tied the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the third following an RBI triple from Shannon McGee.

Western was able to reach base, but could never capitalize on any opportunities as they stranded six batters during the last four innings of play. Loyola was able to take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth off of a sacrifice fly.

Ira hit a single in the top of the seventh, her first base hit as a Leatherneck, in attempt to get the bats going, but Western fell short and lost 3-2.

Seven Leathernecks garnered base hits in Beatty, Maggio, Hoelting, Abbott, Taylor Messer, Sidney Bottino and Ira. Maggio and Hoelting each contributed with one RBI apiece.

Ira got the start in the circle, pitching a complete seven-inning game with five hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts.

The Total Control Sports Invitational continues tomorrow morning (Feb. 11) at 9 a.m. with a match up against Butler and at 11:30 a.m. against UIC. Invitational play concludes on Feb. 12 at 9 a.m. against Detroit Mercy.
