Leathernecks Drop Semifinal Match At Omaha

The Leathernecks fell 2-0 in The Summit League Semifinal Match to Omaha.

OMAHA, Neb.— The men's soccer program fell short off a pair of Omaha goals in the 13th and 61st minutes at The Summit League Championship Semifinal match Thursday (Nov. 9).

Western fell into a 1-0 hole after the Mavericks got on the board off a goal by Fred Frimpong in the 13th minute. The Leathernecks tried to counter for the equalizer off a trio of corner kicks by Fernando Pacheco and Ben Fiddes, but all of the shots went just wide of the net.

In the second half, Pacheco opened with a shot from inside the box that was saved (48') followed by another shot by Paul Kirdorf. Whalen's header in the 59th minute kept up the offensive attack, but couldn't reach the back of the net and was saved by the keeper.

Omaha's Frimpong was able to net his second of the match in the 61st minute to eventually seal the win for the Mavericks. Whalen led the way for the Purple and Gold with three shots and two on goal, followed by Pacheco, who had a pair of shots with one on goal. In net, Tim Trilk was able to total four saves.

The Leathernecks conclude the season with a 5-10-1 overall record, while Whalen, Pacheco, Alejandro Pacheco and Ben Marett wrap up the season garnering All-League honors.

"It was a good college game. Omaha played well in the first half and caught us on the break in the second. We were better in the second half and created some chances, but couldn't equalize," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "Our seniors really brought the game to a higher level and we will really miss them next year. They gave their hearts out to our program and we appreciate the work they have put in as student-athletes representing Western."
