Leathernecks Topped By NDSU At Home

The Leathernecks take the court on Sunday for final regular season match against Denver

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team was outlasted by North Dakota State, 3-1 (25-19, 25-19, 25-17, 25-21), inside Western Hall on Friday (Nov. 10). After dropping the first game, Western tied the match up at one set apiece but fell in the final sets.

"We definitely saw some really good things tonight. I was proud of the way our team kept fighting throughout the entire match. We did a great job picking things up defensively after the first set," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "Hats off to NDSU, they are a great team that just finds ways to keep extending rallies. We look forward to getting back in the gym tomorrow as we prepare for Denver."

The Leathernecks struck first, taking the first two points, but the Bison rallied and won the next four. Down 11-10, the Leathernecks rattled off three points in a row to take a 2-point lead. With the score tied at 17, NDSU scored four in a row that set them up to win the set.

Western rallied, and tied up the score at one set apiece. Both teams fought early, going back and forth, with the Bison eventually taking the lead at 14-13. The Purple and Gold put together a 7-0 run in part to a pair of kills recorded by Shalyn Greenhaw, a Cassie Hunt ace and four attacking errors committed by the Bison. Western closed out the set with a Greenhaw kill assisted by Jaime Johnson.

The third set was full of runs. First, down 3-0, Western scored seven in a row. Then, the Bison, down 11-7, fired off 11 in a row to take an 18-11 lead. The Leathernecks rallied with three points of their own, but it wasn't enough as NDSU won 25-17.

Although rallying late, Western wasn't able to force a decisive fifth set, as NDSU won the set 25-21. After being down 22-18, Greenhaw recorded her 12th kill of the evening before NDSU committed two attacking errors, but the 3-straight points weren't enough to fend of the feisty Bison.

The Leathernecks return to Western Hall on Sunday (Nov. 12) for their final regular season match of the season. The seniors will be honored before Western faces Denver at 1 p.m.
