Western Plays Bradley To Scoreless Draw

Both teams tied 0-0 through two overtimes.

MACOMB, Ill. — The Fighting Leatherneck men's soccer program (5-8-1) played in-state rival Bradley (9-7-2) to a 0-0 draw Tuesday afternoon on Halloween.

"Bradley was able to put some pressure on us. I thought we were more under pressure in the first half, and in the second half we adjusted better," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "For us to get a shutout was a big step, but we had some guys that had good games, along with our backline. We looked organized and that we had a plan today, so it's a credit to those guys who came out and prepared today."

The Leathernecks and Braves both had multiple chances throughout the match. In net, Tim Trilk had back-to-back crucial stops in the 68th and 75th minutes during the second half. A yellow card on Bradley gave Western a free kick inside the box, but Fernando Pacheco's shot was blocked, followed by Armel Kouassi's rebound that was saved.

In overtime, Bradley had a close chance after Younes Dayekh's shot was saved by Trilk, while Pacheco and Amadeo Carbo's shots were both blocked in the second overtime.

Pacheco finished with six shots, while Armel Kouassi was second on the team with three shots and two on goal. In net, Trilk notched a career-high 10 saves for the Purple and Gold.

The Leathernecks now shift their focus to The Summit League Regular Season Championship, as they will play host to Denver Saturday (Nov. 4) at noon. Western sits in second place at 3-1-0 in the league standings, while the Pioneers are 4-0-0.

"We know that we are peaking in terms of fitness and we played in overtime. We got through it and they are ready to go. They are disappointed they didn't win, but they also aren't because we were able to get the shutout. This is the time of year we have to shine, and they are ready for Saturday."

A win would give the Leathernecks the regular season crown, a No. 1 seed in the league tournament and hosting rights for the 2018 postseason. The match will also mark Senior Day for the program.
