Western Cross Country Teams Compete In Summit League Championship

Men's team finishes in fifth, women's team in sixth.

VERMILLION, S.D.- The Western Illinois cross-country teams competed in the Summit League Championships in Vermillion, S.D. on Oct. 28. The men's team finished fifth overall and the women's team finished in sixth place.

"We had a couple really good individual performances on both the men's and women's side. Abigail Richter ran the race of her life, placed in the top 25 and set up big personal best for her. On the men's side Lucas Lingle had a really good race and so did Ross Smetzer, who both came very close to their personal best," said head coach Nick Maas. "As a team we didn't quite perform where we wanted to, but as I tell the team, we finish with our cool down and then we focus on the next race ahead. You'll see the Leathernecks at the regional championships in Ames, Iowa here in a couple of weeks. We'll be ready to pack up and be able to do the things we need to do to be at our very best."

On the women's side, Richter finished in 24th place overall, with a time of 22:32, Nicole Beebe finished in 37th with a time of 23:17, Jacey Roper took 46th with a time of 24:17 and Hailey Tranchitella finished behind Roper at 47th with 24:36. Kristen Goben finished 52nd with a time of 26:49 and Michaela Busch rounded out Western in 55th with a time of 30:01.

On the men's side, Lingle finished in 24th overall with a time of 26:34, Grant Kaiser finished in 31st running a 27:06 and Smetzer finished in 35th with a time of 27:15. Western finished with runners placing in 43rd (Harry Osborne, 28:58), 44th (Quintin Thurman, 30:43) and 45th (Corey Moody, 30:45).

The Leathernecks will travel to the NCAA Regional Championships in Ames, Iowa on Nov. 10.
