Leathernecks Drop Home Contest Against Valparaiso

Whalen scores again and now has scored in six straight matches

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois men's soccer team (4-7) dropped a match at home against Valparaiso (7-5-1), 5-2, on Thursday (Oct. 12). The Leathernecks struck first, but were unable to maintain momentum as Valpo put together three straight goals. Drew Whalen scored for the Western and has now scored in six straight matches.

"We had a chance in the first half when we had it going, and we didn't score. We got the one, but we had six opportunities right in the first half when Armel was really on fire," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We had those chances, and didn't score. And boom, then they come back and that's the game."

In the 10th minute, Angelo Amato put the first goal in for the Leathernecks, as he headed a ball from Amadeo Carbo that was headed in front of the goalkeeper. Valpo responded as Adan Garcia put in one of his three goals on the afternoon.

The Leathernecks had a chance to go ahead in the 23rd minute as Alejandro Pacheco nearly scored as the ball his the crossbar. Valparaiso took advantage of a free kick from 24 yards out as Garcia scored.

Another opportunity came for the Leathernecks as Armel Kouassi crossed the ball to Drew Whalen who dove and headed the ball just wide of the net. Valpo was able to get on the board early in the second half as Jordan James scored his third goal of the season to put the score at 3-1.

Western rebounded in the 73rd minute as Whalen took a pass from Ben Fiddes and tapped the ball into the back of the net to pull the Leathernecks within one goal. Valparaiso scored two late goals to put the match out of reach. Garcia completed his hat trick in the 87th minute off of an assist by James and Jonas Engler socred his third goal of the season in the 88th.

"We had a group of guys that played well today, but we had another group that did not play well. And it takes more than a group, you need the whole team," said Johnson. "Good finishing by Valpo, poor finishing by us, and some poor moments defensively leads to 5-2. Not what we wanted at home, but we're going to have to regroup. We've got Omaha coming up, so we'll reground and get after that game."

The Leathernecks have nine days off and look to rebound on the road against Omaha on Oct. 21 at 2 p.m.
