Volleyball Falls in Midweek Action to Eastern Illinois

Western dropped 3-1 decision Tuesday (Sept. 6)

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team faced in-state foe Eastern Illinois on Tuesday (Sept. 6) inside Western Hall. The Leathernecks opened with a victory in the first set before the Panthers closed out the final three sets en route to the 3-1 decision. Western falls to 0-7 on the year while Eastern improves to 2-6.

"We have to find consistency in our pins. Hitting negative in our pin position, that's our outlet, we have to have better production there," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "Our middles came in and did a good job. Riley Schumacher, a freshman in her first start, did a great job coming in and being aggressive and led us in kills. All in all, we have to have a more solid offensive game if we're going to be able to win."

Both sides were even through the opening portion of the first set. With the score tied, Western broke through and went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-8 lead. Krishna Merriman, Shalyn Greenhaw and Riley Schumacher then helped the Leathernecks extend their lead to 15-12.

Eastern was able to withstand the run and eventually took a 19-18 lead late in the set, but a trio of kills by Claire Grove, Krishna Merriman and Mackenzie Steckler put Western back out front. EIU would tie the match at 22-22, but a 3-0 spurt put the Leathernecks ahead for good as they sealed the 25-22 opening set victory.

The second set was closely contested, with Eastern eventually taking a 25-21 victory. Down 11-9, the Leathernecks went on a 4-0 run highlighted by a Greenhaw kill to take a 13-10 lead. As the teams traded points, Western found itself trailing 21-18 late in the set. Kills from Greenhaw and Schumacher put Western within three, but Eastern would eventually pull away to take the set.

Western took control early on in the third set as they jumped out to a 6-3 lead. Eastern would tie things up, but a trio of Panther errors helped Western to a 4-0 run. WIU found themselves up 17-12 following an ace from Abby Skryd, but Eastern started to creep back after a 4-0 run of their own to tie things at 18-18. EIU picked up its momentum and went on two 3-0 runs to hang on 25-23.

The Panthers found themselves up 14-2 early in the pivotal fourth set. The Leathernecks would not back down as they went on a 6-0 run highlighted by kills from Schumacher and Shiah Sanders to cut their deficit to 15-8. Western made another later 3-0 push after three Panther errors, but it was not enough as EIU went on to win 25-16 to take the match.

In her first career start, Schumacher led the team with a career-high 12 kills. Kaili Simmons compiled a season-high 27 digs while Skryd had 22 assists.

The Purple and Gold hit the road for the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational on Sept. 9-10. Western opens invitational play with matches against Green Bay and McNeese State before closing play against hosts Missouri State.
