MACOMB, Ill. –
The Western Illinois volleyball team topped Chicago State by a score of 3-1 on Tuesday (Sept. 13) inside Western Hall. With the victory, the Leathernecks improve to 1-10 on the season while the Cougars fall to 1-9.

"We had a lot of control in the first set, and in the second set we made a lot of errors and we did a great job of bouncing back coming into the third. We did a great job turning it around and getting the control back, it's a quicker bounce-back than we've seen," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "Sometimes getting that first win can be the hardest when you have a young team, I'm really proud of them."

Down 9-8 in the opening set, the Leathernecks used a 6-0 run highlighted by kills from Emilee Dechant, Lexi Kolschefski, Melanie Patenaude and a service ace from Aleezah Washington to jump ahead 14-9. Western kept the pace as a kill by Shalyn Greenhaw put Western up 18-14. Chicago State threatened the Leathernecks lead later in the set with a 3-0 run, but Western scored four straight points to take the opening set 25-21.

Chicago State controlled the entire momentum during the second set as they claimed six straight points to lead 10-3 early. Western could never find any traction as they dropped the second set 25-14.

A rejuvenated Western team took the floor in the third set. The Leathernecks took advantage of four Cougar errors and a kill from Greenhaw to jump ahead 5-1 early on. Chicago State would answer back with a 4-0 run of their own, but Western would not back down as they led by as many as seven points during the third set. Back-to-back kills from Patenaude and one from Dechant sealed the 25-15 third set victory.

Western found itself up 10-5 in the fourth and carried the momentum throughout the rest of the set. A kill from Greenhaw and two Cougar errors put Western up 17-11, but CSU would work its way back and cut the deficit to two, 17-15, to force a Leatherneck timeout. Three straight kills from Greenhaw and one from Dechent gave Western a comfortable 21-16 lead. Patenaude would come up with the match-winning kill as the Leathernecks took set four 25-17 and the 3-1 victory.

Greenhaw led the team with a career-high 19 kills and hit .232. Dechant followed with 12 kills, also a career high. Skryd dished out a season-high 45 assists, while Simmons led the team with 22 digs.

"Shalyn and Abby both did a great job. Shalyn plays such a high game above the net, for her, it's about the confidence and knowing that she can do it every single time. She did a really good job of battling back and making the adjustments we asked her to make," added Richardson. "Abby does a great job. She's an undersized setter and we leave her out there which says a lot, because we feel comfortable with her running the floor and chemistry being good with her out there. I'm proud of Abby, she played a big game."

The Leathernecks return to action this weekend as they host the Hampton Inn Leatherneck Invitational on Sept. 16-17. Western opens play against Drake on Friday at 7 p.m. WIU opens the final day of play against Southeast Missouri at 11 a.m. and Weber State at 7 p.m.

"Tonight was really important. We had to have that confidence as we open up league play next week. Having this home stretch is important for us, and the confidence during the home stretch is important for us," said Richardson, who's win tonight marks her first home win at the helm of the program. "We're excited to get back in the gym and work on some things we need to work on, but this win gives us what we need going into this weekend."
