–The Western Illinois Fighting Leatherneck men's soccer team continued its undefeated home winning streak following a 2-0 victory over Mount Mercy on Tuesday, Sept. 13.

The Leathernecks (2-3-1), got off to a hot start after Jacob Bevan squared a pass across to fellow teammate Aziz Tahir, who scored just underneath the keeper inside the right post in the 13th minute.

Shortly after, Fernando Pacheco buried a 20-yard free kick in the 30th minute for what would eventually be the final goal of the match for Western.

"You like to get up two goals so you can relax a little bit," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "Aziz was in the right spot and Fernando really hit a nice free kick, so it was two good goals for us."

Defensively, goalkeeper Tim Hansen recorded his first career shutout, totaling four saves in the match.

Overall, Armel Kouassi led the team in shots (6), followed by Tahir (3), while Daniel Collins, Fernando Pacheco and Antonio Aguilar all recorded two. Along with their goals, Tahir and Pacheco both had two shots on goal, while Kouassi led the team with three. As a team, Western held a 17-5 shot advantage over the Mustangs, while both teams tied with five corner kicks a piece.

Next up for the Leathernecks is their third straight home matchup against Kansas City. The match is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m and will be broadcasted on ESPN3.

"We've been working on trying to get faster. We want to try and speed up the way we play so we can get behind people. We really picked it up in the second half," said Johnson. "Kansas City is a very good team and it will be good to have some time off before we play them. It will be great for our guys to get some recovery and have another home game for the fans."
